Looking at buying a D-17. First off where is the serial#? It says D-17 under the feul tank w/ a ring around it, instead of under the head lights and no power steering, if that helps. Also the big lever on the right hand side is the hand clutch right? He tried telling me that it was like a T/A. After looking on here I see they must of had an over and under or what ever. Where is that? He said it didnt work in one of the gears with hand clutch back....guessing that would be the power director or whatever? He was 81 and hadnt used it for 2 years. Didnt start when he parked it so couldnt check trany. Hopefully it isnt stuck. Just one svc though.

Any info would be great!
Thanks
Gary

You need to get the tractor started to know what you are looking at. Many have had transmission problems caused by operators who didn`t take care of their equipment. It is possible that the power director only works in high or the forward position, and slips on the low side, the rear position. That might not be that serioous a problem. Could just need and adjustment. Many tractors jump out of gear when power in unloaded to the rear end. In other words when going down hill or even just changing speed on the level. You need to be able to drive the tractor down hill in each of the 4 gears. Then while going down hill at a good clip, quickly reduce the throttle or move the power director from high to low. This is the test for a worn transmission, which can be quite expensive to fix, and can make a tractor unusable in some gears. Be sure and check to make sure the brakes work good before you start down a hill to check the transmission. It can be a wild ride on a big hill with no breaks on a tractor that has jumped out of gear. There simply isn't any good way to check the clutches or the transmission on these tractors if you can`t drive them. So buy an nonrunning one assuming you are going to find problems, and here it sounds like the owner is already trying to tell you there is a problem.

Texas is right the power diret can only work or not work in all gears. I'm working on my second D-17 right now and have got most of the bugs worked out on it. Only way it could not work in all gears is if one gear is out of the main tranny and that could be big problems

We have a WD-45 so just guessed it was a hand clutch.

Amo,It is the same as your WD45 with a second CLUTCH tied to a second trans giving two speeds in each gear.It can be run in either range all day. DENNEY it is a clutch(wet clutch)not the same as Farmall TA which can not be slipped as the D17 can be without damage being done to it.As far as the 190XT remark, any tractor with a mid or 2 speed shift will have over lapping speeds between gears. You are right in the 5/3 remark but that is only IF you have the tractor trans.in SECOND gear, not THIRD which becomes 4/6 and FOURTH gear becomes 7/8.

Serial number is on the torque tube on left side and will start D17 - it is stamped into frame. Power steering was an option. The big lever is the power director. It gives you the option of two speeds in each gear plus slowing down or stopping without interupting the PTO. It is not a clutch. However, it is pretty much the same as a T/A with Farmall though I believe the result was accomplished a little differently. I don't see how the power director could fail in one gear and not in all gears.

on my 190XT the power director doen't give it 2 speeds in each gear...if you select 5/3 with the trans shifter and the power director lever is back it is in 3rd gear when you put the power director in the forward position it is in 5th gear then...all without using the clutch
