Went and looked at the D-17 again last nite. Its a 1957. Put a battery on it and turned the key...no go, starter wouldnt even budge. Kinda figured that. Guessing coil or sillenoid. Thought though that we could maybe pull start it. That didnt work either. Anyway it turned the motor over. Let up on the foot clutch and the gear shift would pop out of 3rd, p.d. ahead or back. Hold it in with your hand and it would stay for a couple of seconds and then it pops out. All other gears good. He thought at one time he had a service man come up and work on that problem. He took top of tranny off in front of seat where gear shift is. Messed with it for a while, and it worked for a while he thought?! Any way does that give anybody a clue?

Thanks for the help.

Clue to what? He probably tried to bend the forks. but didn't bend them very much - they don't bend easily. My experience with these shifting problems is that the parts (gears) when removed look like they should work. They don't because the forks don't move them all the way into gear. Different forks sometimes solve the problem (did for me on mine). Or you may be able to build up the forks. In worst case, you may need a couple of expensive gears.

Need more info to help on starting. Is there voltage at the coil? Does the voltage go to zero on the distributor side of the coil as engine is turned over. Did you have good fuel and sufficient fuel at the carb?
