I have a '51 WD and just picked up a #73 3-14 SLAT-BOTTOM mounted plow for it. How will the WD handle this plow, and how much weight should I use? I just put brand new rear tires on and do NOT want to use CaCl in the tires because it eats up rims, would rather use wheel weights. Any thoughts?

I also need a new beaming screw, trunnions, etc. as mine are so rusted they are beyond repair. Anyone have a good operating piece? Also I am missing the trunnion cups that fit between the tower and ball and the rear bracket that goes over the rear trunnion ball. Any help would be appreciated.

Drop a bottom and add weight. 3-14 will work in sand, but not clay or gumbo. CaCl only eats rims when a leak is not fixed, but other alternatives are available.

Uncle had bought new a WD and 3 bottom plow, not sure of bottom size, now afyter a couple of years the extra bottom was off and laying in abandond barn and just using 2 bottoms. Years later anouther neighbor had a WD and 3-12" plows burn up in barn fire, replaced with a WD and 3-14" plows. could not guide it as pulling front end sideways all the time, said never had that problem with the one that burnt up. Was just that much more of a load. And slat bottoms were never sold in my area and we do have some sticky ground.

There are a number of other fluid you can use in tires to get them to do what you want. 1 is beet juice, 2 is windshield wiper fluid, 3 is antifreeze. And theres probably a few others.

Where in the world would you get a hundred gallons of beet juice? I can't imagine eating enough cans of those things to fill a tractor tire. Turns my stomach just thinking about it!

Years ago we had a 49 WD and pulled a new 3-14 wheel type (not two point) plow and had no problems. No wheel weights but fluid in rear. Our soil is a mixture of light and black clay.

I've pulled 3-14's in limestone clay ground with a WD very successfully. This was a 1951 model which had 13.6 loaded rear tires and a 130# wheel weight on each wheel. This tractor had had a "high altitude" kit in it which gave it much more HP than it's origional 34. In easier ground, it would pull the plows with the greatest of ease. If you don't want to use calcium, have them loaded with RIMGARD; it's as heavy as calcium solution and is non corrosive and non toxic.

Any idea what the high-altitude kit consisted of and where I could find one if it would work

I'd contact an AGCO dealer or an experienced Ac mechanic for an explanation. Personally I only know what the results were.

flat top pistons for more compression. might as well go .125 over size while it's apart, and think about installing a wd45 crank. or do like i did, and go with a gleaner e engine!

The soil here in SW Minnesota is more of a rich heavy sod and I'm only plowing previously plowed ground so I might try to get away with a little less weight, and thanks for that note on the calcium solution as I have heard stories; obviously misinformed though.

better put around 500# of weight on each wheel then, assuming you have the black gumbo that a slat bottom plow is designed to work in. if you are plowing sand, an unballested wd will do it, but a slat bottom plow will perform poorly in anything but muck. by the way, the cacl isn't caustic (when good tubes are present), it's condensation that eats the rims. thick black rim grease that truckers used to use, (or a modern epoxy) would allow your rims to last much longer than the 60 years the galvanised ones on my wd lasted! there is no substitute for weight, and while the traction booster will do it's job, you'll be mighty unimpressed with no additional weight. unless your ground is well worked previously, i'd add a couple hundred# to the front, to keep it on track.

May or may not pull it depending on your soil. If you can pull the 3rd bottom off you will be better off.
