Do you guys think a wd45 would pull a small square baler? I am looking at one to do about 10 acres of hay with. I really want to fix it up and paint it. Kinda new to old tractors, so I hope I didn't ask a dumb question. Thanks

No problem. Baled for 20 years with a WD and used to bale for the neighbor way back and he had a 45. No difference. They both made darn good baler tractors. The hand clutch was what made the difference. You could ease into heavy spots. The old M Farmall that my neighbor used was not nearly as good a baler tractor.

That is what they were built for. That includes the WD.

I've loaded a lot of bales behind many tractors in my summer years and I'd have to say the 45 rates right up there as far as older tractors go because if you have to stop for any reason the stop is smooth and on those smooth wagon beds that's important. If I have to fault them for any reason it would be they are a little light on their backside and when you have to stop on the downhill for any reason with a 75% load they tend to slide with the brakes applied which is kinda scary like a tail wagging the dog. Horsepower is not a problem with that snappy governor I've seen them run some big balers that were current during the late 60's with big windrows can't remeber the New Holland numbers. I was pretty good at stacking in those days and you had to hustle to keep up with it.CT

As the others have said it will do just fine if its a WD45 and not a WD which is about 10HP smaller but even then a WD should handle it well just not as well as a WD45 would. I have use a Ford 841 and an Oliver 77 to pull a square baler and the Oliver did better because of the live PTO which a WD or WD45 does have it makes a world of difference on a baler

Our favorite tractor for baling was a WD45,the hand clutch was like Live PTO,with the advantage of being able to creep into any large windrows,it makes a great baler tractor in my opinion.

I actually think that, if anything, it is too much power for a square baler. If you run it a half throttle, the engine should give enough to avoid shearing the pin.

I have used my 45, to bale lots of hay.. Plenty of power, although the hand clutch is a pain sometimes...

A WD45 in half decent condition would "play" with a small square baler.
