Have an old B up at our hunting land. Just use it for odd jobs around the land; clearing trails, hauling a little wood, etc. It burns oil and don't look too good, but it does the job most of time. It starts good and today I was doing some work at the hunting land. It ran good (goes right up hills a low idle, second gear, pulling a trailer), has about 18 pounds of oil pressure (has run at that pressure for years), blows a little blue smoke. Heat indicator is slightly below the green operating level. Then with no warning, it loses power, and can barely pull itself up the same hills in first gear. When it dies, it starts right back up, but no power. Have replaced the carb, the coil, the plugs. The guy we got the tractor from said that he never used detergent oil, so we do the same. Is it a stuck valve; a bad plug? If I give up and leave it in the woods and come back for it later, it starts right away and runs good back to our hunting storage shed. Any suggestions???

Along with other ideas- check that the air cleaner is clean. No bird nests, insect housing projects, etc.

Two possibilities here:
1--stuck valves. Dad din't use detergent oil either. While he farmed with the old B never had a problem. About 15 years after he retired(no more hard use) it would hardly run. I removed the valve cover and you couldn't even see the valve springs. I used B12 Chemtool to flush them clean, then flushed the crankcase also. Changed to detergent oil and no more problem.
2-plugged fuel filter/sediment bowl/fuel line. Remove the plug in the carb. bowl or open the drain valve, let it run for at least one full minute. You should have a good stream of fuel after a minute, not a few drips. If not, check all of the above. If you have rust in the tank you may have to have it cleaned and plastic lined. Most local radiator shops can do this and it's not too expensive. Good luck,
Paul

How is the gas tank vented? Just a wild thought. CENTAUR

Shine a flashlight down into the gas tank and see
if rust or dirt is covering the outlet hole in the gas tank. Take the gas line off at the carburetor and hold a clean container under the gas line and see if there's a full flow from the gas line.

When did you replace the carb, today or a while back? My guess would be a lack of fuel caused by dirt some where from the gas tank fill cap to the power jet in the carb.

I replaced the carb this spring with a rebuilt. I do not use the tractor that much, but I do keep it filled with gas and drain the sediment bowl a couple of times a year. I can screw out the needle valve and try some carb cleaner. Thanks.

I finally got to the cause of my problem, or at least I think I did. Checked the tank, checked the tank screen, checked the carb, blew air back through the sediment bowl into the tank, etc. All solved the problem for a short period of time. Then took the sediment bowl off and found a partial blockage at the inlet of the bowl coming from the tank. Cleaned the partial blockage and re-assembled. Runs fine! I think that the partial blockage was allowing fuel through to the carb, but when the tractor was running, it was using slightly more fuel than was coming from the tank. Subsequently, the fuel in bowl in the carb would get low enough so that when I went up a slight incline, it would start to miss because of lack of fuel. When the tractor was level, there was just enough fuel to keep it running. I hope I have it solved. Thanks for the advice.
