Is there anything i can do to the gears so they won't growl so much on a 53 wd. I have had the tractor for twenty years. getting it all fixed up to take to parades. It dosen't sound any louder than it ever has. But a little less noise wo uld be nice. Thank you. Archie P.s. I keep the rear end oil changed and in the shed.

Archie: If your seals are sound between the trans mission and the hydraulic system, and it does not appear to be swaping fluid between them, there is cheap help.
I use ep85w-140 in the transmission/rear end, and one regular tube of MOLY chassis grease added with a grease gun, to each rear final drive, NOT the trans/rearend. It is not the grease, but the MOLY that quiets the final drive gears.
IF--- a gear case does NOT HAVE A CLUTCH inside it, MOLY will help quiet them, and reduce friction, BUT it will DESTROY a CLUTCH, it is too slippery.
You can get the Moly cartridges at TSC for about 50% more than regular grease tubes.

I've used STP and got fairly good results but in areas with freezing weather I would be hesitant too do this. For Parades and warm weather driveing a 50/50 mix would do wonders for the noise issue. Cheaper and more sure as a fix for casual use than a rebuild.

One old trick that I know of but not sure how it would work in a tractor is graphite, if you can find the stuff that is. That was an old trick to make things make less noise years ago but I haven't tried it in a tractor rear end but have in cars and trucks

It's easy to find graphite, just find finger pickup planter seed lubricant. I got about a pound of it for like $5.
