Working on a D 17 gas. Trans pops out of 3 gear high low where ever. Havent had it driveable yet just from what the previous owner told me and from what little we drug it around the yard. Wanting on carb parts so took the top off trans (in front of the seat). All the beveled gears look great. The ones they slide back and forth on arent horable but could be better. Especially second from the front What do these gears do? The forks look allright. The front one on the right hand side has a little wear on each side but not a lot. I know 2 little things can add together, but if I looked at it right I think that should run 1st gear.

Any way any help would be great!
Thanks
Gary

wdTom is correct...the gears are "constant mesh" The teeth inside the COUPLER (Item 25) or the corresponding teeth on the selected gear can get worn to the extent that they won't stay engaged.

Some of the problem may be due to the rails/detents beign worn also, but it's most likely the short stub teeth.

What you were looking at when the cover was removed was 4th gear (towards the input shaft or front of transmission), and directly to the rear is 3rd. The COUPLER then, is moved forward to engage 4th (shift lever to rear) and moved rearward to engage 3rd (shift lever foward)
2nd and 1st are the next (towards the rear)

Hopefully this picture will make it clear.

I am not familiar with the D-17, however starting with the WD-45 and late WDs the transmission was "constant mesh" which means all the gears are in mesh all the time. Different sets of gears are engaged by sliding dogs. If the edges of the dogs get worn from grinding into gear too much they start to slide apart and first thing you know you are in neutral. Jack up one rear wheel, block the clutch pedal down, turn the back wheel, shift the gears and see how it all works.

There is an end play spec for the gears. I don't have the spec but someone should. If this measurement is past spec then you probably need to tear down and replace thrust bearings. The shift rails could be the problems by not allowing the gear to be fully engaged. If you can push the shift lever past the detent a ways the the detent on the rail needs to be move by welding up the old detent and grinding a new one. There is also a spec for this. Many from the factory had the detent put in the wrong spot. Or could be the collar and gear are just worn out and need replacing.
