I just bought a new D17. It had a funky trip bucket on it which I removed. The 3 pt conversion wont lift up a round bale. It will lift my bale forks with me standing on them but not a 800-1000 ib round bale. any ideas?

My 1961 D-17 will lift the big 5X6 bales. It has an aftermarket 3pt. The geometry of the 3pt and the geometry of the hay spear can make a big difference in lifting power. I have one spear that has long forks and a large frame. It will not lift the bales all the way up. I have another with shorter forks and a compact frame that lifts them all the way up.

My 1960 D17 series 1 lifts them with no problem. It did not at first but then a check of the flid level revealed that it was low. Once the proper amount of fluid was restored it had no problem lifting anything I have asked it to lift. Your setup sounds funky to me as it sounds like someone modified it.

You probably need to connect a suitable pressure gauge and see what your hydraulic pressure is. You probably need a 0 to 4000psi gauge. You should get a shop manual too for the correct procedure. Hal

My '57 series 1 had no trouble lifting a round bail - as long as had plenty of fluid in it. Check the fluid level before you start taking stuff apart.
I sold my D17 before I moved to the mountains last summer - I kinda wish I still had it, but the NF would be scary here. The guy that bought it couldn't believe how strong the tractor was for being that old.

I assume when you say a "new D-17" it is new to you.

I know people who are lifting round bales with a D-15 and the WD-45 so the D-17 should have no problem. My D-17 lifts a very heavy 6 foot grading blade like it isn't there. Yours should, too. Is the fluid level in the hydraulic reservoir stable or are you loosing oil? Does it lift at a reasonable rate or is it slow? Is lift rate affected by different loads? Do you check fluid level with the lift arms raised?

Sorry, more questions than answers. Need to more even to guess.

i dunno, i doubt round bales were around when that D17 came out of the factory. it probably just plain out doesnt have that much strength to lift it. check the hydraulic oil maybe? i'm sure you could buy a frount mount pump and then it would prolly do it

I was wondering if it could be the hydraulic pump isnt strong enough at first but now I think its how the connections are. A single line runs out to the lever on the left side of the seat there is a single lever there and two hose coulplings. to engage the pump you must use the lever on the steering wheel. The line that goes to the lever has an T handle that allows you to stop the flow of fliud going to the lever by the seat. am I making any sense?

A picture of your plumbing would certainly help, but it sounds like someone has converted it to a two way remote hydraulic system. The D-17 should have approx 3500 lbs of system pressure, but by using a spool valve for the remotes that has an internal relief valve, the system could be bypassing to sump at somewhere around 1800-2000 lbs. The hi pressure cylinders on your three point are simply not large enough to lift any amount of weight at that pressure.

Dunno, we need some more info or some clear pictures of the set up.
