Last fall, I picked a few rounds with my old case picker. This was the first time I used the picker since I bought it at an auction. The machine worked well, except for the excessive amount of shelling at the snapping rolls. I am looking for any advice. I also have the manual and I have adjusted the rolls so the ear snaps off like the diagram in the book. Another question I have is this: In the back of the manual, there is a section on optional equipment, and there is a "hybrid corn attachment". Has anyone ever used these or heard of this? How about pictures and measurements so I can make one? I really want to make this picker work the best it possible can before I go to another project. Thanks

I have 2 case PR corn pickers. I use both of them. If your snapping rolls are set too far apart, they will shell before they snap. You might also be going too slow. Both of mine have husking beds. I do not think that mine have the hybrid corn attatchment, but it is just a set of plates that block the snapping rolls. One of mine has steel pegs screwed into the snapping rolls, and they can shell corn if they are turned parrallel to the rolls.

Remember today corn is bred for combinding. Very few use the picker. You may talk to your corn dealer and maybe he can tell you which corn to purchase for next year.(to late for this Yr.) Also was the corn exceptionally dry. If you have
good storage for ear corn you can pick it earlier.Like 20 to 22 % moisture.
Also keep the snouts as high as possible , yet pick the corn.
Stay on the row as much as possible.
Check your PTO speed as well as ground speed.
Hope this will help.
