188 diesel timing - 4 or 8 degrees btc?

Finishing up the rebuild on my 188 diesel. Put the timing cover/pump assembly back on and checked the timing. It's at 4 degrees btc, (which I assume is where it was when I tore it down, cause I never removed the pump) My concern is that the valve cover says I should be at 8 degrees. So, now I don't know whether to change it or not. This is my first diesel rebuild. Should I try it at 4 degrees, and then adjust it later for startability and smoke. or set it to 8 now, while it's easy and on the engine stand. Maybe split the difference and set it to 6 degrees. The other thing I need to do is establish a good TDC mark, I am just going off of the timing tab on the front cover and marks on the damper. Maybe that's the difference...
Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Jon

Specs say 6,but on my 1965 8 is where it runs the best.

Make sure the timing pointer is not bent, retime to eight and try it.
