According to Tractor Data a 530 uses a 159 gas engine and 188 diesel; a 630 uses a 188 gas AND diesel engine. What is the difference between the 159 gas and 188 gas, sleeves, pistons, rods and crank?? Can a 159 block be used to rebuild a gas 630 with a cracked block? Seller says 630 had engine overhaul 3 years ago and block froze before it was winterized.

To be brief, no the 159 block will not work for repairing a 188 gasoline engine. The 188 gasoline engine is pretty much a unit by itself, and although related to the 188 diesel, they don't share that much between the two. The blocks and cranks differ in that the diesel has 5 main bearings and the gasoline only 3. You could install a 159 engine into the 630, in which case you'd have more or less a 530 tractor. Alternately, a combine engine (188 or 201) could also bolt into the 630.

Has anyone ever seen or done a 188 to 201 conversion on a 630? Just curious, I was wondering what the HP gain would be??? Also would the increase HP put too much strain on the rest of the driveline? I"ve always been told the driveline was maximum capacity with the 188.

 201 in a 630 in reply to 630crazy, 08-09-2006 09:51:50
I have heard of the 201 being swapped into a 630, but as you have heard, the problem arises with too much strain being placed on the drivetrain. It is true that the 188 engine had all the power the other components could handle. To illustrate the point, the 630 was rated at about 50 PTO h.p. while the much larger 730 was rated at 58 PTO h.p.

I am pretty sure that the 159 is more like the 148 and the 188 is comparable to the 207. I know the 188 block is 2" longer than the 159 but has the same mounts. We put a 188 in a skid loader that had a 148. But the tractors require a longer or shorter hood when doing a conversion. So, no the 159 would not have much the same with a 188.
