I"ve been looking for a dependable tractor, not many around to look at and I"ve been taking way more time than I should, but I don"t want something that will break down constantly. I also don"t like many that I am seeing. It will be used for haying every day in winter, moving hay, baling, etc. Below are three tractors in the area, I"d like some advice on them. I think they are overpriced but all of them are in my area because of the lack of used ones. I want something that is reasonable on fuel.1. 1987 2294 mfwd, with heavy DuAl loader, 7000 hrs., 18.4X42 Rear Tires, 16.9X28 Front Tires, new bearings in front end last year, no other major work done ever. This is the only one in the list I looked at but did not drive, the salesman was too busy to hardly talk to me. It looks good, I don"t see any oil leaks at all anywhere. I could not get into it due to it being locked, but I did see that they had an actual bolt tightened down in the shift gate, blocking the shifter from going into park. They want $18,500. It is also the closest and only 60 miles from me. 2. 1988 1896, 5300 hours, not been through the shop yet, until after harvest, 2wd, they want $18500 for that one too, no loader. 3. 1985 2294, mfwd, 5800 hours, they say in the ad one year guarantee, nothing about a loader, 18.4X38, $24,500. My only other choices in the area are "78 JD 4240 with no work done and almost 8000 hours for $19,500. 30 series JD similar are about $15,000. For $10-$12,000 I could get a JD 4020, or IH 1086, neither with work done, and at least 5000 hours on the IH. I see many 1086s around needing or having overhauls due to cavitation or needing work done on the rearend, plus I don"t care for the transmission the way I would use it. If a 1086 has much work done they bring $15000+. I also haven"t seen much on any auctions either. Thanks.
