My 1070 has a recent problem with the steering actuator. One of the side (piston) covers on the steering actuator is suddenly cracking, and allows the hydro fluid to escape under pressure. The cover is on the left side, rear-most. The first time, the crack occurred by a corner of the cover, so I replaced it with a new cover. But after about two hours of running at power (using the brush-hog), the new cover cracked too. Has anyone experienced this before? Do not know if the problem is in the steering actuator or somewhere else.

Look under the tractor where the steering shaft comes out and see if it is centered with the wheels stright ahead. Some one may have adjusted the tie rods off center and if one of the CAST stops that hit the steering shaft could be broke causing over steer. Not the axle stop. The one I talked about on another reply had been broke and painted over making it hard to see.

The steering shaft appears centered, but will check again. The cast stops are there, they seem to be working because of the worn paint at point of contact. When the cover is replaced, the tractor can be started, and the steering rods, shaft, stops and so forth, can be looked at with a more critical eye. Thanks for getting me looking in this direction.

Their is also stops on the housing where the steering shaft comes out. See if one is broken off. They are casted in the housing. I have seen one broke off causing the same trouble you are having but it had a loader on it.

Your steering stops on the front axel are broke off or bent. They are at the bottom of spindle tube. That lets the front wheels turn too far!!!!

Great suggestion . . never would have thought of the steering stops. Went out in the field to look and happy to report, all metal stops are still in place, are straight and appear to be working as designed. Any other ideas?

I still think you have a problem with over steering. With end cover off and front end jacked up, steer wheels to end of travel(eng off)and see if piston comes out enough to hit cap. If tractor has power assist brakes, relief valve seat may have backed out.

The problem appears to be over-steering as you suggested. Nothing major found, but there are a bunch of little things that might have added up to be enough. No further problems with cracking covers in the last 4 hrs (knocking on wood) after making sure hard & tight turns were prohibited. Thanks for suggesting where you thought the problem was.
