10x28 11.2x28 tires work together?

My VAO has an almost new 10X28 tire, and I need to replace the other one. Local dealer says 11.2x28 is the closest size they can get, and it may be larger in diameter. Does anyone know if there is a real problem running these two sizes together?

Whenever you"re replacing a tire on a drive axle, try to match sizes as close as possible; the gearing in the final drive, designed to let one side roll faster than the other when making turns, etc, all too often doesn"t like turning at different speeds all the time (one driving tire bigger than the other) and will begin to complain, very expensively.

Actually that's an Old Wive's Tale. The spider gears are constantly working back and forth to take up small differances in the wheels. Tiny turns to small slippage to tight turns with the brake on one side. They actually make things that use rearends that have one axle welded tight and all the power going to the other side. These things run for years like this with no problems.

Bob is right. The 11.2x28 is the current label for the old 10x28. But unless you get two from the same manufacturer the physical size may be different. My backhoe tractor has the same size on both sides but the difference in diameter is about 3" because one is a Goodyear and the other is Bantum. Makes the loader bucket run cockeyed to the ground.

You think this is bad wait till you go get a new tube.
I had to replace a tube on my Kubota the other day and it came in sizes that fit about 5 differant tires. We put it on and not sure what happened but had to take it in and have them fix it again. It had a small hole in it but they couldn't find a reason. Its holding air now.

PS pretty soon you will get one tire that fits all just blow it up till it fits. giggle.

Those 2 tires are the same size. The old designation was 10x28. The newer designation, since sometime in the 1960s, is 11.2x28. The tire companies do things like this just to keep us confused. They are using metric sizes now.

They might work together, but if you spend a lot of time on pavement the difference in diameter could be a problem. It may only be an inch or two, but one side of the tractor will sit taller.

If your tire isn't too bad, you might be able to get away with just a new tube... But if you are already looking for a tire you are probably already past this point.

Good luck.

I'd shop somewhere else for another opinion. I talked with our local shop this past summer about a new tire for my VA, and he called it up on the screen right away. They're available.
Heck - it might be the same tire. My old one that I thought of replacing was labelled 10/11.2x28. Maybe the 10 is standard now and doesn't need explaining?
Just a thought.
