A decal on the back end says 120 but after looking at my sales literature it sure looks like a SP-12 Case? The 120 in my literature has a sloping grain bin with a fold back auger and other differences.

Somehow I forgot to write down the serial number of this one!
There were (3) SP-12's there plus a big pull type Case combine for a total of 5 combines.Pictures of all of them are in the ytmag combine forum.

In my 150 years of Case it states the sp12 hsd D series engine and the 120 had the Case 400 engine in it. Looking at the pictures it looks like the sp12 had a square grain tanl. The 120 has tapered tank. Grain tank spout is located on left had side of tank on SP12 where the 120 looks like like it's on the bottom of rh side by operator on 120.

1206SWMO,
On 12-17-06 you posted some pictures of a SP-12 from a Stephen in WA. over on the combine forum.
Don't know if anyone noticed, but the return elevator is on the wrong side. It should be next to the operators knee on the right side.
Also, it has an auger to take it back to the cylinder like the Model 120 instead of dumping back into the feeder house, yet the 120s still have it on the right side just like the SP-12s.
So either some farmer engineered himself a better return dump, or maybe this could be an experimental machine the factory boys were playing with to test the new dump position over the cylinder???
I think all it would take is the bottom flighting under the sieves to have reverse direction and the drive on top rearranged to accomodate a left side drive.
Or maybe the owner saw the new 120s and wanted the new style return on his older machine.
Just makes me wonder who did the change, as it looks good enough to be factory as all pieces appear to be painted. As I understand it, the engineers did a lot of their changes and trials on the fly with machines that were never returned to the factory and were left with the farmer. Just curious to know if Stephan knows any history of the machine and if the Case boys had played with it.

Dont remember what a120 had different but do know Dads sp12 cost about 5700dollars an arm you see going to header did not have holes in it as photo shows. Spent many dusty days running it an was under it setting fan shutters an had engine running. I heard this distinc sound of variable speed an clutch jumping out of notch an start forward motion of combine with wheels almost running over me!!!! Never did that again. Photo has lever showing an i believe pedal showing is 1 of brakes aslo combine had hyd header foot control an long handle for use of handvalve

This looks like a very late SP-12. The thing that is confusing is that it appears to have a foot clutch. Right? It has the "D" engine and it definately has the SP-12 grain tank. It also appears to have the tailings return shute rather that the auger return. I'd say SP-12

I'd say that you are right on it being a late SP-12.Heres the right side view.If I had only remembered to check the serial number. The back end with the decal could have been off a 120.

Not an expert, but I can tell you the holes in the header arm are found on early machines from 1945 thru 1948 or 49. Sales lit from 1949 show pictures both ways. No holes in 1950 thru 1953 machines. 9, 12 and 15 foot headers offered on these later models. The Case model 120 came out in 1954 and can't be confused with SP-12s at all if you could compare them. The biggest visual difference is the sloping grain tank. Second would be that they did away with the tinwork on the right side of the operators platform. Third, the ladder is squared up and parallel with the platform instead of being mounted at an angle. Fourth, the tailings are augered to the center of the cylinder, rather than being dropped back into the side of the feeder house. Also, look for... power steering, hydraulic speed control, folding unload auger, spring loaded seat and many other changes. Available with 10, 12 or 15 foot headers. Hope this helps.
I just as well mention before someone asks, the Model 150 is basically the same machine, only with the new Case 400 tractor engine and an electric clutch on the header. Happy hunting and Happy New Year!
