TOM- Got it fixed. The fuel in crankcase was a bad injector, and the missing was because 2 valve pushrods were bent. Mechanic said at first he thought it meant a rebuild but then checked the valve lash and saw it was way off. replaced the rods, the injector and runs great. I have not heard it but mechanic says its a world of difference. Thanks for the advice Steve

Tom Thanks again. I will check all and let you know what it was. May be a while as I am on Active duty right now away from home (recalled reservist). Hope to find someone around my area that can do this while I am gone though. If not I will be home in July and will tackle then Thanks Steve

Tom Thanks for all the obviously expert advice. Sounds like you were working on these things long before I ever got the hairbrained notion it would be fun to own one. I just use it around my place and it is a ton of fun. I will check all you said but other possible solution was injector pump seals. Is there any trick in replacing these? Can a backyard mechanic do it?
I have a manual but it dosen't tell much Steve

Steve about the seal yes you can pull pump and do the drive shaft seal which may be the problem if you do this make sure and bring the pump up in time ,,line up marks in pump window DO NOT move engine after removing pump seal has a lip both ways to seal oil one way fuel the other you must not roll either lip as this will cause leak they make a tool for this but I have done many in the field withoutit take your time but the miss you take about makes me wonder if the pump and or injectors might have further problems I know it costs money but I would think hard to have pump checked by a pump rebuilding shop it may not need it I cannot tell with out hearing it run but wanted you to know all options I can think of tom

blowing dipstick out I have seen before 1-blowby caused by worn pistons and sleeves by just a lot of hrs or dirt entry in intake system or by fuel dillution or by glazed cylinder walls engine coolant temprunning below 160 degrees or if it has old type dipstick with just an O-ring to hold it in try installing new O-ring or newwer style screw type dipstick also make sure you breather tube that comes of valve cover is not plugged or bent closed also have you checked valve settings and timing of fuel pump I have also seen bent push rods cause this most times when these bend it is from to much starting fluid hope this helps I work on a lot of these engines in backhoes we sold a LOT of these in the 60'and 70'I'd guess around 300 at least...tom

By the way - which one of those problems would explain the oil blowing out the dipstick? Thanks again Steve

Well from the replys it sounds like you guys have seen this problem. Either a cracked sleeve (sounds major) or a pump seal. How hard is it to replace the seal? Can a backyard semi mechanically oriented guy do that ok? Thanks Steve

fuel in oil is from injection pump this will take out your crankshaft if you keep running it that way lot of people lose these motors from this

Steve,

My guess would be the drive shaft seals in
the inj pump. Bearings don't like oil that is thinned with diesel fuel . Slide the pump back and replace the seals .
