I've got a choice. Buy a PTO for my 1945 VAIW-3 almost sight unseen, with "nice" gears, or buy a new replacement driven gear (38 tooth) and rebuild my existing chewed PTO. (By the way, it was chewed before I got it, so don't blame me for the gear grinding.) I already got a replacement drive gear (14 teeth) when this "deal" came my way. I expect if I buy the new gear, I'll have to replace bearings and seals, too. I guess the question is "How hard is it to rebuild the PTO?" Anyone got part numbers on the bearings?

I"ve got a VAIW that has some sort of PTO on it, so they must have some sort of hookup in the rear end. Our"s drives a gearbox underneath the seat, that has a round rubber clutch?, shock absorber? attached on the outside.

It's a 4 speed gearbox, anyone have an idea what this may have been used for?

 Oiling WWII Bombers in reply to Dan Bear Kelley, 02-26-2007 15:11:56
Mine has the delete plate, too, but the output shaft is in the rear-end housing back there. It looks as if it should bolt up.
.
I'm building the tractor for the Commemorative Air Force, Dallas/Fort Worth Wing. I want to use a PTO hydraulic pump to pump 60 weight motor oil into those big ol' airplane engines. At air shows, it becomes a real drag to pump motor oil up 20 feet to the engine nacelles. Some of those bombers take 40 gallons at a time, per engine, and some of them have 4 engines! So, my solution is to throw a 55 gal drum on its side on a trailer behind the tractor, and connect it to the input side of the pump, with a long hose on the output side to reach the top of the engine nacelles. At idle, everything should be controllable.
.
I suppose I could install a VAC hydraulic pump up front...That's an option. This is probably cheaper, as I will have a spare PTO pump when I get a Super M pump on my Farmall M.

hello Dan should work I pump trans-hyd fluid with roller pto pump when I drain and refill trans housings some of these hold 30 gal takes 5 minites instead of 30, if you are pumping clean oil all the time your pto pump will be even better,for those of you doing this like me and want to recycle the oil I use a 580M hi- flow hyd filter and base not cheap at set up but saves you loads on oil if this gets metal contamination from trans this is why I use the roller pump as it handles this with no screen at draining when you get done with this please post us a picture of the girl filling a bomber Tom.

Hi Dan the pto for the VA tractors is very simple to rebuild if you chose to I am also wondering like Gene about the VAI-W pto I have a VAI-WII and it has a solid rear end also, not saying your's is not what you say just think it is fairly rare for these units would be neat to see one thanks Tom

I have two VAIW's and neither have pto. They do both have delete plates. Without looking internally, I would think that a va series pto unit would bolt right on. If this is what you have, you should be able to pick one up pretty easily. There are a lot of VAC's out there.

 VIAW-3 vs VAIW-4 vs VAIW-II vs... in reply to tom stanley, 02-27-2007 05:58:26
My "War Department" manual shows the VAIW-3 as being single rear tires, and the VAIW-4 as being dual rear tires. I haven't heard of VAIW-II, but my ignorance can be cured, I'm sure. :-)

Hi Dan;

I am curious about the PTO on your VAIW. My VAIW has a smooth back on the rear housing, so could not use a PTO. Do you have pictures of the PTO?... Gene
