Re :Bugs in Radiator tranny cooler ,,Spent most afternoon trying to flush out the lines to no avail With 180 psi hydro ,, Well ,The tranny works like its supposed to when I bypass the cooling lines away from the radiator , Q,?,What are the possibilities of installing another style of cooler for this tranny in front of the radiator , Any ideas on the size it would take ? Thanx Jim

I put an aftermarket oil cooler in my 800 gas. The original radiator was shot, but I found a good one off a non-case-o-matic. I mounted the cooler it right in front of the radiator and routed the hoses down through the hole next to the power steering.

This might make the plumbing simpler than putting tees to go through the radiator too. The tranny oil goes through the oil cooler and filter then dumps back into the reservoir, so there shouldn"t be significant pressure unless you have a clogged line or filter.

Be sure to get a cooler with large enough lines and fittings, I bought mine at Ruhl"s automotive in Mt Joy, PA, but I can"t remember the brand name.

I haven't done any heavy work with it yet, but driving around the farm and letting it slip in a high gear for a while doesn't even seem to warm the oil significantly. I'll let you know in a few days after I drag the manure spreader up the hill and back a few times.

It's just an air cooler, I mounted it about 1/4" in front of the radiator so that it gets good flow from the fan. Power steering works, but has a slow steady leak. Good luck with yours. -steve

The Tranny cooler in my 800 Gasser developed a high pressure leak into the coolant. Luckily the pressures between coolant and tranny oil are different enough to prevent coolant into the trans oil. We plugged the trans oil line ports in the rad and simply connected the hoses, bypassing the cooler. Works OK to clear snow but haven't yet pulled a heavy draft load. Must find a replacement cooler before really putting her to work!

I did a pressure check on the cooler lines and found it to be 155PSI... much too high for an aftermarket auto/truck trans cooler. Plus, I believe, the flow would be much more restricted with the typical 3/8" lines compared to the Case 1/2" hoses.

So I've been watching eBay for months for a high pressure liquid to liquid cooler similar to those used on industrial/production equipment like small hydraulic presses ect. Just a few weeks ago I scored just what I wanted for $12.50 on eBay. It's a TRW unit, about 12"long, 2"dia., with 1"NPT inlet/outlet for coolant on the ends and 1/2" NPT in/out for oil also on the ends, at 90 degrees. Pressure rated at 300PSI. Now the problem is how to fab coolant plumbing to & from this cooler. Space under the sheet metal around the rad area is mostly non-existent. Because it’s a liquid-to-liquid cooler it need not be in the airflow in front of the rad. Considered mounting it back by the battery area but didn’t find any coolant access points on the engine block, such as for a heater.
Anybody have any ideas?

I suppose you could try a air to air cooler like on automatic tranny's on todays pickups would recomend keeping close eye on temp though make sure you have a operating trans temp guage I think why Case used a fluid to fluid was to maintain a more even temp flow and to aid warming of oil in cold temps, also talked to my radiator guy he said best chance was flush with water and detergent to flush out oil then clean water and blow back and forth with air he said maybe a 50-50 chance of this working,I do have an 800 parts tractor with good radiator if that helpsand were there are maybe 10 more in salvage these are in NE WYO and NW SD if this helps.150.00plus shipping

thanx Tom ,, Wish you and I were next door ,I would take you up on the offer ,Fella up the road thinks he has a oil cooler that can take the 180 psi pressure in the back corner of the shed ,,I will T plumb this as an auxillary ,set it in front of the radiator ,and come up with an inline screen to catch the bug feathers ,should more decide to break loose ..Not sure of the results of taking this radiator to the expert shop to get worked over ,, BIG Bucks on old tired brass and aluminum parts ..The auxillary is probably best option ,, And I will WATCH THAT TEMP GUAGE ,, Thanx Jim
