My father-in-law has purchased a 1030 "bargain" tractor that has a couple of serious issues. First of all, the 3-point arms will not raise. They are completely unresponsive. We are getting a lot of pressure at the remote valves, and they seem to work well, but the 3-point is completely dead. Any ideas? The second problem is that the pto is hard to engage. After playing with the linkage a bit, the shaft starts to turn, but can be stopped by grabbing it with your hand. I disconnected the pto shift linkage, and the shaft which it attaches to is free to slide in and out of the tractor rear-end approximately 4 inches. This does not seem right. It seems like there should be more holding that shaft in place than just the external shift linkage?? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THanks in advance--Alex

Hitch. 1 Make sure sensing adj strap, located right of seat base on platform, is engaged in fully in forward position. 2 remove seat and center platform, (sensing strap will come up also, no need to remove 2 mounting screws) make sure long spring is attached to front of hitch valve spool and that spool travels in to lower, out to raise when working control.Valve is removed by unscrewing spool and removing mounting bolts.Spool cannot be removed and REPLACED without dissambly of valve. PTO. Remove round cover held on by 3 3\8 bolts on RH side, opposite of linkage for inspection of fork and clutch adj.

Also make sure that the remotes are centered. They have priority over the 3-point, and if they're not centered, the 3-point won't get any pressure (Mine had bad return springs on the remote, and often I'd have a lever off-center and couldn't figure out why my 3-point wouldn't lift.)

On my 930, this is what I have found:
I think the spool is stuck in the 3 point valve.
unscrew the spool from the linkage and unbolt the body then get spool out and clean. Don't take all of the lingkage apart like the I&T manual says. On the clutch, maybe the fork is loose? there is a 2 inch plug on back side used to adjust/inspect clutch.

For the 3pt problem, it definatly is the control valve under the seat. You have to take off the fuel tank and the seat and platform and take off the top cover on the draft arm housing, remove the control vavle and completly disasemble and clean then replace all o-rings. This will fix your problem. Goodluck!!-Brian

Very common problem with 30 and 70 series. 1030 brian is right. Clean 3 point valve under seat. There is a 1/2" diameter steel ball thats not able to seat becuase of dirt.

I've got my 830's 3-point valve apart right now. You don't have to pull the whole rockshaft housing like the manual says, but if you want to get the valve out, you have to pop the cover and take the pin out of the "J" link. If you're handy in tight spaces, you could probably just remove the side cover to get to the valve. On mine the frontmost (lowering) valve was dragging badly. If it doesn't close, you can't raise the arms. The holding check ball is the middle opening, but that only affects holding, not raising. Getting the lowering piston out could be a bear if you don't remove the valve body, because the only way to push it out is through the hole in the bottom.

You could have just un-screwed the spool from the linkage by sticking a punch in the hole on the end. No need to remove any covers.

Normally, yes, but this one is tightened quite well and has 40 years of weather helping it stay put. A couple of punches won't break it loose. Maybe a couple of 14" pipe wrenches, but I don't want to do that to my spool. S'okay, the top cover gasket needed replacing anyway, and given the state of the rest of this tractor, it didn't hurt to take a peek at the DOM linkages.
