I'm in the market for a 2290 and understand that those should have all had the rear end update that was offered by Case in the early/mid 80's. Is there any way to tell for certain (from outside the tranny case) if a particular tractor has in fact had the update? I have found that dealer records are of no help, unless someone has specific knowledge of a particular tractor. Just want to be sure I don't buy something that is about ready to need the update as it is expensive. Thx.

When I bought my 81 model 2290 with 1300 hours in 87 it had a tag under the dash on the firewall just ahead of the clutch and brake pedals that said it had the rear end update. It didn't do much good because when I got it home and drained the rearend oil parts of the new washers came out of it. By the time I got rid of it at 5500 hours I put 2 ring and pinions in it and I was getting metal filings out of it again. The latest updates are to the 94 series. I have owned four case tractors 970,2290,2096,3594. the 2290 was the best to drive but the most expensive because of all the repairs. Maybe I just got a lemon.

Another update done and some of the late 2290's had it was a double clutch pack instead of single. this will probably only make a difference in the tractor if you do loader work.

I worked at a dealership when these were done. From what I remember it was up to tractor owner if they wanted it done. The thrust washers in the differental housing were changed to ones that had tabs to keep them from rotating. Also a oiler tube was installed that squirted oil directly at mesh point between ring and pinion. It was mounted to top cover. I think the only way to tell from outside is to see if this tube is on the top cover. The tube would be slightly ahead of the axles.

Was this rear end situation also true with 2390's? How big is this tube? Pencil size? Bigger? Thx.

If I remember right the 2390 and 2590's got thrust washers only. As for the tube on 2090's and 2290's it was mounted to the top cover with a flange with 2 -5/16" bolts. The flange was about 1/2" thick x 1 1/4" wide and maybe 3" long. The tube was about maybe 5/8" diameter and was centered on the flange with mounting bolt on each end. Hope this helps, its been almost 23 years since I worked on these!
