Am looking at an 1175 Case and it has been taken good care of and has been rebuilt once, but has cracked a sleeve two different times. I dont know if it was the same sleeve both times, but I do know it was the number two hole this time. Corey C gave me some good direction with the information about the counter bore, but I talked to the mechanic who replaced the sleeve today and he said the crack was in the lower half of the sleeve and if the counterbore was off it would have busted toward the top. Is this the case?Would there be other possible causes for cracking a sleeve two different times? The mechanic said he thought the tractor didnt have enough antifreeze and the sleeve busted over the winter. The owner says that he got on it and used it for about an hour after it had been sitting all winter and it suddenly lost power while he was driving it. Any thoughts, comment, or suggestions? Thanks guys.

If your tractor lost power while running you better pull all your bearing caps, both rods and mains and make sure you did not spin a bearing. The smallest amount of antifreeze in the oil will cause the bearings to lock up with symptoms that you explained. If a main did spin your block is likely shot.

Ask the owner if he used Ether. That would likely be the culprit. But, when he says he "suddenly lost power", that is not a symptom of a cracked sleeve, especially if the crack is at the bottom.. The symptom of a cracked sleeve is coolant pushing out the radiator, and coolant in the oil.

My dad had an 1170, (very same engine and transmission), and two 1175s. They were almost bulletproof, and all of them would do as much or more work as our neighbors JD 4430s/4440s. You might be sure you're not overworking the tractor. The first 1175 my dad bought was cranking over 175hp from the factory and was burning the valves. He had the dealer turn it back to 145hp and had no more problems with it. If the sleeve is cracking in the same hole, I would think you definitely have something wrong with the block in that particular engine. Just what that might be I don't know, but I do know from our experience, and I think there are many that would agree, these tractors were pretty much trouble-free. I would have a machine shop check to see that the holes in the block that support the sleeve are TRUE, meaning two things: 1, they are circular and not oblong which would squeeze the sleeve and 2, that the top and bottom holes in the block are aligned perfectly. Just some thoughts.
