Hi, I have a 1976 1070 that some times I can't shift into 1st and 3rd mechanical range. When I do get it in I can go between 1st and 3rd no problem. It does not grind while trying to get it in.If I play around long enough with the clutch and shift into 2nd or 4th range I can some times get it to go. Also I notice that when I shift into 2nd or 4th some times I have to step the clutch in and out several times to get the trans. to "brake" so I can shift With out grinding at this time no grinding in 1st or 3rd just won't go in. It seems to help if you have the the rpm's up a little or the tractor is warm. just bought the tractor and have not used it that much.

Thank you Jon K

Check the lower stop bolt on the clutch pedal. The bolt may be contacting the firewall too soon and not moving the inching spool far enough to release. This could cause the grinding of gears.
Also check the four-speed quadrants. If they are not centered in neutral the 2nd/4th quadrant can keep the 1st/3rd from shifting.
I hope this helps.

Sounds like you could have broken bevel springs in the power shift clutches. The bevel springs push the shifting piston back so the clutches do not drag. Ours was broke, so when you shifted into 2nd powershift it would stay there and then when you shifted back to 1st it would lock into 2 power shifts at once. very hard on the tourque limiter. Was fine when it was warm but like you say the clutch had to be feathered especially to get it OUT of gear. Just my guess though.
