That sure didn't come out formatted like I typed it and previewed it! No tables displayed here! Let's try again. I listed those with a quantity of 0 because there really was such a model... just none built in 1957.

According to 'Illustrated Buyer's Guide Case Tractors' Second Edition by Peter Letourneau, in 1957 there were: 445 Model 400 Standard/Dsl, 1823 Model 401 GP/Dsl, 0 Model 402 Hi-Clear/Dsl, 25 Model 403 Hi-Clear/Dsl, 0 Model 405 Orchard/Dsl, 70 Model 420 Industrial/Dsl

I don't understand. My research shows all Case 400 Diesel's with a serial number greater than 8106131 were Super diesels.

A few parameters which made them different then the earlier 400 diesels were:
1. The engine were 267 cu-in vs 251 cu-in
2. The part number on the Engine block was A111 vs 6400
3. The super's RPMs as depicted on the American Bosh injection pump is 1550, a regular 400 is 1450 4. A 400 super has a latch to lock the pto in the off position -- not true on a regular 400
5. The Super carried the "SUPER" decals

The book mentions the details you posted (also says hp increased 6%). It says the "Super 400" was introduced in 1957, but it does not say if ALL of the 1957 models were "Super 400". I doubt it because it says they were both offered. The numbers they provide have them all lumped together. Guess we have to wait for some of the experts to chime in... can't count on the book. Super 400 also had pressurized cooling system, a drag brake on the PTO, larger tool box, and larger tires,

When you say both were offered, do you mean both sizes of diesels or both gas and diesel? Only the diesels were super diesels, right? Also, was the regular 400 diesel built until replaced by the 400 super diesels? Meaning they were both offered the same year, but not at the same time?

I don't know the answers myself. The book 'Illustrated Buyer's Guide Case Tractors' Second Edition says "The same blocks were used for both gas and diesel engines". Next paragraph "In 1957 Case increased displacement of the 400 engine to 267ci, spawning a new model it dubbed the 'Super 400'. The Super 400's engine offered a 6 percent boost in horsepower over the engine of what then became the 'Standard 400'. The new model, which was offered in addition to the old model, also added a pressurized cooling system; a drag brake that prevented creeping of the PTO shaft, thereby preventing 'free wheeling' of PTO machines in transport; larger toolbox, and larger tires."
