My 1030 is making some bad noises in the rear end, especially when I turn. It has always had a little rear end noise, especially in 4th (or 8th) gear, now worse. Don't know if it will make it thru planting & sidedress season or not. Anybody know what I should expect - and where to start for boneyard parts. Near IN-OH line.

I did my 970 year and half ago in an open shed in the winter. It was mild. I bought a genuine service manual which was well worth it. You will need to make or borrow a special tool for the cross shaft thru the differential. The tool for setting the preload on the bull pinions is easily made also. As for cost, less than a grand if you get into it soon. I didn't and spent about 3500.00. My differential pinions were gone and a piece went thru the ring and pinion causing me to have to replace them. Tom

There is a good chance that the spider pins are worn loose in the diff housing. allowng the spiders to walk endways in the diff carrier.will need a lot of parts to rectify, carrier, pins spider and probably side gears plus all gaskets seals etc. good luck. mEl

Not what you want to hear but pinion bushings are shot since you saaid worse in turn. Long time ago mechanic said to park it when you hear noise.Could get worse if you keep going.Could be bad bearing also but fixing sooner is better!!!!! !

Thanks. My Dad said on one of his 1030's that it was a "sliding block" that was part of the brake system. I have no idea what he was referring to, but I'm guessing your suggestion is more accurate. If it is the pinion bushings, is it a split job or done from the top of the tranny case?

This tractor is scheduled to be sold/traded and it is too good of a tractor all around (3600 hrs.) to not try to bring back. Am I looking at major $$? I could do most of the work myself. Thanks again.
