Case 580M Backhoe Series 2; S/N 6C402832

Problem with intermittant no-start condition.

Next problem relates to shifting; with unit engaged in forward gear, no shifting can be accomplished thru the 4-speed shifter on the fly; speed change can only be effected if forward gear is put back in neutral position, gear shift done, then forward gear engaged again. As I am unfamiliar with the operating characteristics of this unit, is this a normal thing. I WOULD NOT THINK SO.

So far have found a seemingly faulty SPST shift switch at top of gearshift lever; this must activate a solenoid switch to port hydraulic pressure to the clutch throwout bearing, allowing a shift, as I see it. Without a wiring diagram, I really can't tell for sure, however. Am also curious about the "Micro" limit switch activated by the accelerator pedal linkage. Is this an interlock of some kind.

I am an automotive, diesel and FAA licensed Airframe and Powerplant mechanic who had this problem thrown at him on a somewhat emergency basis. Any help would be appreciated, short of telling me to get some manuals, which I know.

Many thanks. Pete Magnuson

Pete, The reverser in the M series units is a torque converter with a hydraulic reverser with two multiple disc clutches , one forward , one reverse. The clutch assemblies are before the gears on the 4 speed transmission, the CLUTCHES are disengaged to shift, there is no conventional clutch with a throwout brg, etc. You should be able to accomplish a on the go shift by useing the clutch disconnect button if it is functional, the one on the lever that you described earlier, if the trans goes into neutral when that is depressed it is working. Need more info on the starting problem, but will not be near a computer from now till a week from Tuesday, hope this helps. In general, the neutral start switch is in the f/r handle on the column, so go from there. Do not overlook low batt voltage, especially if it will start after inital statrup in the morning. mEl
