The worse I have every seen adn still running was our first 1030. It would go through 2 gallon a day under heavy field work. I mean this was a solid 8 hr days. Does yours have oil leaks? The 10's did not have as much head leaks as the 7's and 9's due to their metal gaskets. Loose valve guides and worn rings will cause a excessive use of oil. How much does it go through in a day? I have a 9 and a 7 slated for head gasket replacment in the near future.

If it starts ok, and youn don't see leaks all over, then you must have broken rings or a head gasket problem, Whatever, I'd say you need to tear it down.
