I have aquired a "58 800 diesel with COM. It is in pretty good shape but the engine is stuck. Is it worth tearing down and rebuilding the engine? If I do get it running, what problems could there be with the COM? I have 2 running 830 LPs, and they sure could use some of the parts off the 800. I"m just having a hard time with scraping it out. Any advice would help. Thanks

Personally, I'd try to repair the engine before parting it out. A "Stuck" engine can sometimes be easily un-stuck, sometimes not. But why not try first since it's a decent tractor otherwise? If you can free the engine perhaps it won't even need rebuilt, just cleaned-up internally. Is the fuel system intact and reasonable clean?

We use our 800 COM as a planting and baling tractor and it's a very reliable machine. Not a Big-Horse like our Case 2470 & 2870, but really fuel efficient and the COM certainly is apprecaited for our operation.

Well, I took the pan off. It contained mostly diesel with some oil mixed in. This same fluid was found in the flywheel housing. Rear main? Also, aparantly #2 exhaust valve had been open for however long it has been sitting. The piston is firmly attached to the sleeve. This was found after removing the heads. Whats the next move?

Sounds like the fuel tank gravity drained into the oil pan, overfilled it and of course the rear seal is not intended to be a diesel fuel seal especially when it's under the fluid level. Are you sure that the fluid in the flywheel housing is fuel/engine-oil mix? On the COM the torque converter is attached directly to the flywheel and unlike a car the assembly is inside the "wet" COM housing, spinning in the COM oil supply. The fluid in the flywheel housing is probably diesel mixed with ATF.
At this stage, I'd say that's not a big deal.

The open valve is also not a big deal... but the seized piston(s) is. Can you determine that only the number 2 is tight? If so, that's good. I'd say the next step is to soak the cylinder bores with penetrating fluid for awhile and then start twisting on the crank. If more than one piston is stuck you may need to remove the caps from a couple of c-rods, so as to lessen the torque required to break the others free. Of course, then rotating the crank in the proper direction to move away from the disconnected rods. If you cannot "crank" em' free, you may need to also "beat" em' free with a proper diameter block of hardwood on the top of the piston while twisting the crank. If this effort fails then they may be too stuck to attempt salvage. Which means the next step is to remove the piston and sleeve, still stuck together, as an assembly and then replacement may be mandatory.

Fun Project, Good Luck.

it really depends on Your situation ..Our 800 is a real fuel mizer , We LOVE it for All reasons mentioned and More ! .. DC TOM uses hydro pressure to free stuck pistons , others have uesd grease gun pressure . Any way , If It Were MINE , I would fix it , VBest Wishes , jim
