2294 powershift problem

The tractor makes a rather loud grinding/shuttering noise when the clutch is fully depressed and when it is placed in reverse. I tested the solenoids and it seems that the top solenoid is energized when the micro-switch on the clutch is closed. The same solenoid is also energized when placed in reverse.

I was thinking it might just be a valve shuttering because all of the gears do work. I am worried though since I had noticed filings in the transmission oil. I am going to check if the filings are magnetic (they look like brass).

I also thought maybe one of the clutches were slipping and causing the grinding noise and filings. Does anyone know which clutch the top solenoid activates?

I am wondering if it is worth buying a service manual. I probably should do a pressure test. Are the clutches able to be repaired without splitting the tractor? Does anyone have a manual they want to sell?

I would appreciate any help.

I forgot to mention the following.

The actual clutch doesn't seem to work very well either. It acts as though it is slipping when shifting. I wonder what would have caused that. I don't plan on driving it much but would it be safe to drive home from the neighbors? If the C4 clutch is slipping how safe is it to operate(in forward gears)? I am worried because of the noise when clutching. There is also a barely noticeable noise when the power shift is in third gear.

Thank you for the input so far

Personally I would never run any transmission (or engine) that is making abnormal noises. Don't even start the engine. Nothing but more damage can come from running it. Even though the tractor may move, the (most likely) contaminated oil is also moving. Filters can only do so much and the smallest of foreign matter can quickly ruin a pump and/or control valve(s) hydraulics.
Recommend... Tow or trailer it home, or to the shop.

Probably wont hurt to drive back from the neighbors....if you stay in forward ranges and dont step on the clutch much....you are not using C-4 when moving forward.

I agree with Jim. Grinding noises are almost always a sign of mechanical failure. You'll have to split the tractor and tear down the powershift.

Sounds like you have a C4 clutch problem.
That clutch is one of the clutches required for Rev, it also always engages when the clutch pedal is depressed.
No you cannot access-repair any of the 4 clutches without splitting the tractor. Basically, after splitting the Power Shift portion of the tranny is removed from the front.
I'd suggest that a service manual is certainly required. Plus a parts manual is also desirable.
Most manuals are available from this website, check the upper left corner of any screen. eBay is also a good source.
Good Luck
