Hi Folks,

Have a 1943 CASE VAI that I've been slowly tinkering with on the road to restoration. It was in pretty good shape when I got. Anyhow after I fix the brakes and leaks in the rear end it will be close to painting time.

What I'm curious about is the previous owner said the previous owner he got it from got it from the original owner which was a town DPW which used it for mowing. The tractor has the original mower. In fact it has the original dealer plate and serial number plate showing all the serial #'s and mower type.

The previous owner did a quickie paint job and painted it Case orange, however you can still see the original yellow color underneath.

Was yellow a factory option for the VAI's? Or do you think the original buyer, town DPW, painted it yellow?

Does it matter if I paint it yellow or orange? i.e. is it any more valuable in yellow with all the orginal tags and mower and such? Or does it not really matter?

Thanks,

Don

Yellow was a very common color for the industrials. Many were sold to highway maintenance departments for roadside mowing and sold with Detroit mowers. Most had a high speed high gear for fast transport.
My 1945 VAI was originally yellow and and is equipped with a Lull hydraulic loader. The high gearing makes it awkward for a loader tractor... Gene

VAI's higher gearing? in reply to Gene Dotson, 09-09-2007 19:25:36
Regarding the hi gearing is that just 4th gear or all of them, for even in 1st it seems to move along pretty good.

Did the VAI"s have higher gearing through the whole range or just 4th?

'45 VAIW in OD Green in reply to dpski, 09-09-2007 15:53:28
It always has been common to paint a tractor to match what work it will be doing. So, paint it as you see fit. It is your tractor, and I don't think color will change the value of the tractor one whit. My personal opinion is that it will be more unusual to be painted as a DPW tractor in yellow. My 2 cents
.
I'm working on a 1945 VAIW that had many layors of paint on it. Flambeau red was at the bottom, with a thick brushed-on coat of OD green, followed by black and finally yellow. I know the Army Air Forces bought a bunch of VAI's and VAIW's to use as aircraft tugs. This one will be going back to the Commemorative Air Force for that same work, when I get it done. However, the hangar in which it will be going houses mostly Navy aircraft, so I will be painting it Navy Grey with a black star and a black "U.S. Navy" on the hood.

I had a 43 SI it was painted Flambeau Red Original color. I have seen them in Army green Navy grey and Yellow all depends on who bought it and for what. Yours was no likely Yellow at first as that would fit for who owned it.
Its always nice to have it the original color if possible.
Walt
