I bought a 1950 Case SC With a crack in block in usual blace(behind carb). I have purchased another block 3.5 x 4.0 stroke complete except for head. The question is block in tractor has word SPECIAL cast in upper right front of block. Before I start ripping and tearing, what does Special mean and will the head from that engine work on purchased block. Thanks.

Could the engine have came off a combine? I never seen the word "special" on one. If that's the only crack the block had, a little grinding and J.B. Weld would have fixed it. I wouldn't throw it away, someone may want it.

As far as I know the engine is original to this tractor. The word SPECIAL is cast in relief on the fwd right hand side of the block, spelled upside down just above the magneto. The engine also has the high compression head. Block is cracked very badly in almost a square shape and would be better off replaced since I have another one. With the info I have now the word SPECIAL is a trivia question.

If your new block has 3 1/2" bore then all the parts from your old engine will fit, everything.
The '52-'54 blocks had a different style sleeve and these are not interchangeable. All the rest of the parts from '41-'54 will fit your new block. There are two cylinder heads. The low compression head is #5618 and the high compression head is #5617. All the old style blocks will accept sleeves with bores up to 3 11/16". Sleeve sets are easier to get for the old style blocks. I have tractors with 3 1/2", 3 5/8" and 3 11/16" bores. All are old style blocks. If you have a 3 1/2" bore that is worn, you can rebore the sleeves in the block to either over size for less than $100 and buy new pistons to have a quality rebuild. Good luck!!

Thanks for the comforting information. I will check the number on the head for the type. Looks like my winter project is a definite go. Thank you very much! Good information is the best tool you can have.
