An old uncle of mine recently traded off his 970 and loader for a 2290 and loader at a case dealer, he has had it for a few weeks and he said the pto pops out of gear when tractor is idled down and also it is jerking when he drives with engine idled down. I went up to his place, but everything worked fine when i was there, don't know much about those type cases, guessing it is pressure pump or internal leaking, anybody have an idea where to start. Dealer has not been very helpful saying he bought it as is, and they can't get to it until after harvest is done. He just uses it for haying and cattle chores so he is not pulling on it when it starts to jerk, it has around 8000 hours on. Thanks for any replies.

By the way, the PTO is probably something you don't want to mess with without a good coach looking over your shoulder.

About the "jerking"....Not sure if I understand your description exactly. The type of Bosch injection pump used on a 2290 can cause the engine to "lope" at low idle and load. A shop manual will show you how to adjust the idle and the supplementary idle screws. That might fix it.

I'm assuming you have 540 / 1000 PTO.

I used to do time at a primarily Case CIH store. I think the problem is the reverse inertia when throttling down can cause the output shaft shift collar to disengage. There wasn't enough "slant" or "rake" engineered into the shifting parts. The quick fix is to install a much heavier spring...but make sure you eat your Wheaties before you flip shafts. Try to track down an old Case master mechanic. I don't think the stiffer spring is in the parts catalog. He will have run into this before.

I had forgotten about it until very early Deere 6000 and 7000 series tractors began doing the same thing. I think JD designers copied the 90 series Case PTO....all the way down to the original design flaw. If you've ever seen both of them apart, you'll know what I'm talking about. Deere's solution was to throw away $1000 worth of gears and install a set with the proper cut.

But I'm only going on memory here. The Mrs. says my memory is so good, I can remember things that haven't even happened yet.

Case Power Shift Transmissions use a common oil supply for the Tranny, Steering, PTO clutch, Three Point hitch and Remote hydraulic circuits (connectors on back for implements). Also an integrated triple-pump supports the system. The first thing I'd check is the oil level and condition of filters.
