If you go to this page you will find some photos of the Case SI Airborne tractors. www.syltech.net If you have the airborne loader which works as you described, it is Hough loader built especially for the SI Airborne. If you have the Case serial numbers and the numbers and information off the military tags I can determine an approximate build date.

c.ofl.p.o. 231403, Army Corps of Engineers Puchase Order number

date 12 may 1943, Date of contract, 109 tractors were built on this contract.

us registration# USA 850164, This is the Army vehicle number this number is in the 1st 1/3rd of units delivered.

t.m. 5-3012, This the Army Tech manual number
5-3012. This manual is available at portrayalpress.com An excellent manual, worth the money if you are doing a restoration.

serial# SI 4804886, the Case serial number, built in 1944, 1st 6 months of 1944, approximately.

The airborne tag which should be on the right front corner of the front axle support is the tag for the vehicle.

The brass Corps of Engineers tag indicates that the engine was either rebuilt or replaced in 1945. This is a tag that would have be added when a major component was replaced or rebuilt.

There were 1001 of these tractors made for the Corps of Engineers during WW II, so they are fairly rare. I know of about 15 at the present time. Only 2 with Hough loaders.

That is a fairly rare tractor you might want to see what color it was painted originally. Could be anything from Flambeau red to Yellow or Navy blue or Olive drab green. see if you can find some of the original color under something like the hood or cowl.

Walt

Here is a Case SI.

SI not S-1 was the industrial version of the S series tractors, S, SC, SO and SI. Many were used during world war 2. Some equipped with a leaf spring supported front axle for air dropping, Were used extensively for base and airstrip preparation in the the Pacific islands.
About 26 horsepower. The number 6600A is the casting number of the engine block and not the serial number. Tractor serial number may be on a plate riveted below the steering column and if plate is missing the serial number will be stamped on the left side of the engine bellhousing flange... Gene

Ree;
I have a picture of my "S" in the photo archives listed at the left of this site. Enter Case s in the search and you will be able to locate it. The S and SI are very similar tractors... Gene
