'39 Case RC rear end

I am buying a '39 Case RC which has the sunburst grill. On the transmission cover it shows 4 speeds forward and 1 reverse. On the rearend housing all the way back on the right side at about the one oclock position is a flat boss that has stamped on it 4SPECIAL. I also have a '38 RC that is unstyled, doesn't have this raised boss but does have a four speed transmission, 4 forward and one reverse but it only shows 3 forward gears on the transmission cover. The forth gear in the '38 definetly is road gear. I am wondering if all '39's had a boss with 4SPECIAL stamped in them or is this something different. The tractor is not running and kind of rough plus still 2 hours away. I didn't think to take a picture of this stamping and I won't be picking up this tractor for some time. Any insight is appreciated. Roger

I am by no way an expert or anywhere close, but my class is rebuilding a 39 RC that is styled and our tractor has 4 foward gears and 1 one reverse but the raise numbers on the transmission only has 3 forword. Ours does not have anything stamped on the rearend houseing that says 4SPECIAL. I don"t know if this helps any but thats what ours has.
