Case C, 1936 now running after years of sitting. Checked lubricant in engine and diff. Appears the same reservoir serves rear end and trans. Correct?
Would that be 140weight lube?
What are the fine-threaded, 1" (or so) caps used for at each side of the rear axle? There is dry gear- clunking sound in rear axle, how is that lubricated other than plug on rear of 3rd member?
Any easy inspection of final drive?

Maybe Gene will stop in here but I think that the C requires that the valve cover be removed to oil the rockers once every day. Some have been modified so check this out before running it. Like the said get an owners or best a Service manual for the tractor. Ebay.com or one of the online manual stores.

Model C Capacity for Trans and Diff is 36 qts. of 140 wt oil. Crankcase oil is 7 qts. of 30 wt. Radiator holds 5 gallons water/antifreeze.

The cups are grease cups and should be cleaned out and filled with a heavy good quality grease and as you tighted down the top it forces grease into the area being lubed.

Good Luck!

To inspect the rear end you can either drain the transmission or face the tractor downhill on a steep slope then remove the rear cover. Check the adjustment of the drive chains. They are adjusted by slackening the nuts around each axle housing and turning the adjuster at the back

The noise you describe may be a loose chain or another problem in the transmission but you will be able to diagnose with the rear cover off.

It is simple technology; it was designed for a farmer to be able to fix in the field. Main thing is to get an operators manual etc

Thanks so much for these replies! I didn't really expect them - but I greatly appreciate them. This forum (and a manual) may be my lifesaver.
