Should I assume that since my 1953 DC has a coil and not a mag that it has been converted to a 12 volt system? It still has a generator on it not an alternator. I thought that 6 volt coils were fairly avaiable. Thanks for the help.

99.9% of all coils are 6 to 8 volt and require a balance resistor when used with a 12 volt system. Just because you have a coil don't assume it has been converted to 12 volt. Check all the light and se if there is a resistor between the ign. switch and the coil if not then its most likely a 6 volt system also the generator will say 12 volts on the tag in most cases. Walt,
Thanks for the info. I'm gonna have to look at the generator tag if it's still there or check for the resistor because this one didn't have any lights at all when I got it.
Thanks again,
Larry

Wouldn't checking the battery be the simpleist way to find out?

LMAO!!!

Yeah CWH you have a point! When I picked it up the guy started it with a 12 volt and we loaded it. When I got it home I did the same thing to unload and move it into the garage. It currently does not have a battery in it.
Thanks

12 volts will not necessarily instantly fry a 6 volt coil. The starter motor won't care...so just starting it and running for a a couple of minutes may not be a sure indicator of voltage.

Paul,
Yeah I knew that I could get away with starting it off of that battery and moving it into he garage.
Thanks.
