Hello I am working on my Dads 1170 Case. I get it into 8 gear on the road and I have a hard time staying on my side of the road. I am correcting the tractor by the stearing wheel to keep from going to the right or left, all the time. What do I fix first? The cyclinder thats turns the wheels or tear apart the dash and take the stearing unit out? I should get this fixes before someone gets hurt. Thank you and great day.

I am not the Case man by a long shot, but a couple of tractors the boys have had loose tie rod ends as well as other problems in the linkage. Once I got that all tight and the toe in set the problem was solved.

I have a 1170. First thing you need to check is the transmission oil level. The two sight gages on the lower, left, front, are horrible to read so one tends to not check the trans oil level very often. It is difficult to tell if the site gage is showing full or empty. Only when the oil level is half way on the glass bubble can I tell where the oil level is at. If at first I can't tell, I put the tractor on a slight slope leaning to the left and then look again. The hyd pump may be sucking some air. Check the transmission pressure gage on the dash for normal pressure. Next check your mechanical steering linkage parts at the front axle. Also check the axle pivot bushings.

The 1170 is a good old tractor even though it has some shortcomings as all tractors do. I also have a 4010 Deere, 656 IH Hydro, 8830 Ford, WD45 Alis, and DC Case. The 1170 is my favorite and the 4010 is my least favorite. The 4010 has the most shortcomings for what it was intended to be.

My guess is the steering valve under the dash.
