Cleaning fuel tank

The fuel tank in our case has some rust sitting in the bottom of it. A lot of the trash got drained out when i drained the tank. The tank is the split tank design where there is a tank on either side of the tractor, then a hollow part up towards the top that ties the two together, then there is a little line that connects the two sides together also. All of the reducers that reduced the tank thread down to the size for the hard lines were completely clogged with rust and trash. After letting the tank sit for a few days to dry out, i ran a magnet along the bottom to see what i could find. I found lots of rust. Is my best bet pulling out the tank and then flushing water through it? I have already pulled out the tank fuel sender so i could look at the other side. Also is there a way i can somehow coat the inside of the tank to stop the rust. I cannot get to the middle section at all due to its all sealed up so i need to see if i can coat that part also. I'm sure a new tank is not cheap, and i'm thinking that maybe i can either save this tank since its not rusted through, or i could make a new tank out of stainless or i can cut this tank apart and really clean it out and try to coat it as best as possible, yet this idea doesn't seem like the greatest nor the perfered.

BTW its diesel. If they make a plastic replacement tank that is an option.

I will give this a try. I already replaced the fuel filters initally thinking that was the problem. I'll pull out the tank tomm and pick up some gravel.

I have cleaned a lot of these and have had to weld up some holes in the past. I have always had a lot of luck with a very old fashioned approach. I put about six hand fulls of 1 1/2 clean gavel in the tank, put on the lid and let my kids roll the tank around in the yard for about 30 mins. I then rinse it out good with water. Let it dry good for a couple of days and then rinse with a little gas. Prepare to clean your screen on your sediment bulb a couple of times after the process to clean out the residue. There are very nice kits available out there to clean, acid etch, and line gas tanks, but I have never seen the need for it. My thought is if it is that bad, it needs to be replaced anyway.
