So I'm monkeying around with my new toy, trying to find out where all the leaks, noises, etc. are coming from, you know.
I had the tappet covers off (with engine idling) making sure that there is lots of oil up top and it occurs to me that I'm going to see how fast that fancy centrifugal oil cleaner is going. I take the top off expecting oil to go all over the place and the thing is spinning and oil is coming out the bottom but no massive over flow like I expected. I check the oil pressure and it is still up and oil is still coming out of the rocker holes. Shouldn't the oil spinner be at oil pressure (my cheapy gauge says 60 psi)?

Is this normal?

Is that filter just a bypass filter?

If yes that makes me nervous. Is there an easy way to plumb in a spin on filter?

Having fun,

Thanks,

JP.

The Case service manual has a very informative cross-sectional drawing of the centrifugal filter system. It's indeed a partial flow filter. Most of the oil-flow bypasses the filter chamber. Pressure in the filter is less than the regulated flow thru the engine. I suspect the filter system must operate at less internal pressure to properly function. I agree with mEl, don't worry about it, just keep it clean. The operators manual states that the operator should listen for the spin-down sound right after engine shut down. If you don't hear it spinning for about a minute, then it's dirty.

This type of filter is used on quite a few European industrial and military engines. If your are not aware...the 2870 engine is not a Case engine but a Scandia engine made in Sweden, if I remember right.

Can't answer your question on the centrifugal filter but even if you plumb in a spin on it will still only be a partial flow. We have that engine running in a 4890 with out any problems since new so don't go looking for things to worry about. Just change the oil and air cleaners and service the centrigugal as recommended.
