A good starting point to get an engine running is to turn the needles all the way in and open the idle needle 1 1/2 turns and the power needle 2 1/2 turns. After the engine is warmed up, the final adjustments can be made... Gene

I'm quoting from the operator's manual:
"To obtain a starting point, operate the engine at full governed speed. Be sure the engine is up to the correct operating temperature. Turn the load adjustment screw (the screw on the bottom of the carburetor)in (clockwise) until the misfire and power falls off; the turn it out (counterclockwise) until the engine runs smoothly. Turning the adjustment out (counterclockwise)produces a richer mixture while turning it in (clockwise)produces a leaner mixture.
Place the tractor under load and observe carefully how the tractor reacts. If there is backfiring through the carburetor, loss of power or the tractor tends to stall when the load is applied, it indicates that the setting is too lean. Turn the load adjustment screw out (counterclockwise) not more than 1/8 of a turn and again try the tractor under load. Continue to do this until the tractor pulls into the load smoothly."
