I was wondering what kind of oil should I use in my 48 La ?? I'm useing 15/40 detergent in it now... it's holding 25-40 lbs pressure when I'm plowing [ fun ] I ask because I been told by others it should have NON- detergent oil in it.. thats what was in it when it was new... I found Non-detergent oil at your new Farm store 30 wt. I ask because I'm having leaking on the gaskets... pan... and peak hole .. I know there's guys out there that know way more than me... I want to THANK YOU in advance... I do APPRICATE any and ALL answer's Mark

I have always been sceptical of multi grade oils in Case wet sleeve engines based on this experience. Early in my career as a Case Mechanic Our dealership sold a 530 to an area farmer who promptly started useing Agway multigrade oil in it. Soon the customer called and said that his antifreeze was in the pan, upon disassembly I found the o rings had softened and were like jelly. I replaced them and recommended single grade as recommended by Case. I realize that technology changes and this may no longer be an issue as oil formulation changes and so does o ring materials as problems are encountered, just kinda sticks in your mind though. Just an experience I thought I would pass along, Surely otherwise the multigrades have the lube qualities needed, I just worry about the o rings. mEl

I run 20 W 50 in mine and have no problems with it. I wouldn't put Non-detergent oil in my worst enemies tractor. Walt

Detergent oil will clean up an old engine that's run on non-detergent for years. I agree, there's no reason to run non-detergent in your tractor.

I know you didn't ask what kind of non-detergent to use, but it really doesn't matter what kind of motor oil you use as long as it's a reasonable viscosity for your application. What ruins engines is LOW or NO oil!

This is something I'm dealing with right now. I dropped the oil pan, scraped off what I think was the original gaskets from 1949, and have made new ones. I also made new gaskets for the hand hole covers. I've used some black gasket sealer for the back corners. I will put it together tomorrow and find out if there are any leaks. The pan had about 2 inches of sludge in the bottom, so it took quite a lot to clean it up. I bought a Napa filter (1092) today and plan to use a good 30w oil. I also fashioned half a gasket for the back of the oil pan/front of transmission case. I didn't feel like splitting the tractor to replace that whole gasket that is one piece.

Only an uninformed person would use non-detergent oil in anything.

I use nothing but 14W40 in all my machines. The LA is very happy with this oil. If deyergent oil had been available when the tractor was built, that would have been the recommended oil.
Replacing gaskets in the hand hold covers and oil pan gaskets is not a difficult job at all. Be sure to remove the oil screen before removing the pan. Just have to be real careful on the rear corners at the flywheel cover. I usually use a little loctite 518 sealer there... Gene

Oops; should have typed 15W40. Been a long snowy day here today... Gene

I think you had better get sombody to get you to heck out of the house, for a while. These long winter days, must be getting to you too. I was going to ask you where in the Wide World of Sports (from the movie Blassing Saddles) did you get your 14w40, because I never heard of it. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

14W40? I was wondering if you were mixing up your own oil to come up with those numbers.
