1030 fuel question

I bought a 1030 diesel from a local estate. The family doesn't know anything about it.I got it home, fixed a few things and had it running the next day.It ran fine, but had some fuel leaks.I replaced an injection line and a couple fittings.
I started it today and it died a few minuites later, like it ran out of fuel.An hour later it started right up and ran fine.I drove it around the barnyard and it ran great. As i was driving it back into my shop it died again.I ordered new fuel filters from napa. I removed the two side filters, they were black, but the fuel looked good. The primer pump doesn't seem to work,as it doesn't do much and has a lot of slop in the lever. An old book i have mentions a primer pump in the injection pump.Could this be bad? Is that what draws the fuel from the tank?I took the check valve out,the one on the filter housing an it looked good.If the final filter was plugged would it act this way? Thanks, ray

Hi Ray, I've ran 1030's for almost 30 years now. Love them, but they are kinda like a woman lol.
Yes check your final filter, Check your bleed screws on all filters they love to leak and or suck air. Also on the engine side of your fuel pump is a Transfer Pump with two little bolts, if this goes bad you will die out. look under the fuel pump where there is a fuel line going up between the pump & engine.
Mine went to heck a few years back, I sent it a Injection service company to rebuild. Put it on and my 1030 runs like a top now. Hope this Helps you. Jeff From WI.

That little pump should supply about15-20 psi when running.

on my 1030 the primer pump works. but you have to give it a shot of air in the fuel tank and it will pick it right up and pump. at the bottom of the fuel tank on the right side of the tractor. standing at the back looking at the tractor is a petcock at the bottom of water catch. make sure that you drain it. make sure that you have a good flow of fuel.also make sure that you change the final filter. if that filter is pluged up it will be heavy. at least that is what i have found. the fuel goes through the final filter before it goes to the injection pump. there is also a bleed screw on that filter. i like my 1030 and use it all the time. i have not had too many problems with it. i hope that this helps. greg

On my 1030 that that little primer pump dosen't seem to do anything either. As I recall it is just gravity feed to the first 2 filters than through the injector pump to the final filter. It is a bear to prime, and CaseIH wants a fortune for a new primer pump. In an earlier post someone suggested placing a electric fuel pump in line somewhere between the tank and filter. Next time I have to prime it I most definately will try that.

The fuel flow is gravity to the rear filter, then exits the filter body to the transfer pump then pressurized back through the secondary filter then to the final and on to pump. That is why the first filter bleeds easily by gravity but not the other two!! Some filter bodies have a T valve that is opened to bypass the transfer pump circuit for bleeding. Don't overlook the disc valves located in the primer pump body itself, I have had to clean a few of those as the discs get plugged with debris. The valves are located behind the thin nuts that the fittings screw into, upon reassembly they are directional so fuel flows in the proper direction. A fuel pump would be a nice addition and make bleeding easier. On bodies not equipped with the T bypass valve I have many times taken the relief valve plunger out of the filter body till the bleeding was done so fuel didn't have to go through the transfer pump to the other filters then replace it once the final filter was full, makes bleeding a lot easier. A little stretch of the transfer pump relief spring will raise the fuel pressure and 70 series did not even have them. mEl

You need to remove inlet line at hand primer. You should have a full flow of fuel there. Than if that is ok you need to remove hand primer an you can disamble an clean . There might be broken off pieces of this an that plugging that. Than replace an it should prime all filters including final . Do them 1 at a timewith final filter last.As for little pump on injection pump its job is to receive fuel from first filter than it returns fuel back to second filter than on to final filter an into injection pump. If little pump is working correctly you will feel pulses on short line from final filter to injection pump.iF YOUR TRACTOR HAS A FUEL PRESSURE LIGHT IT SHOULD GO OUT IF PRESSURE IS CORRECT bE VERY CLEAN ESPECALLY CHANGING FINAL FILTER.

Also good way to disamble hand pump is lay it on old towel on floor . Keeps little parts from getting lost!!!!. Also dont worry about what feels loose when you pump it . If your washer is gone you can put o ring on it an it will seal when you are done priming an turn handle tight
