I am curious if anyone can help point out some good positives and negatives between a 1800 Oliver diesel and a Case 1030. I need a tractor to run a round baler and put hay out year round. They are both pretty decent tractors, but I am not sure which one would be more reliable and more likely to start good in adverse weather conditions. If I buy the Oliver I need a wide front and a drawbar if anybody has one close to Indiana. Thanks for your help

Don't know about the Oliver but we have a 1030 bought new by grandpa in 1968, the year I was born. Never have had any problems with it. On cold mornings I have more problems getting started that it does.

Well Ive had both tractors, and being mostly a Case fan this is my opinion.Case 1030 tractors are good in the field working ground etc. But for hay making , I would take an Oliver. But I would stay away from the 1800. I have a 1850 with the 354 Perkins in it and it is the best all around tractor that I have. The only thing that comes close to it in compairison is my Case 970.They are both good for hay. The 970 is newer than the 1030 and you can really see the differance. I also have a 730 gas and a 930 diesel and Ill walk by them to the 1850 or 970 anyday! Just my thoughts ! Doug

1800A is a dog, we had an 1800B, good tractor, 90hp, eventually traded on a 970 but it did it's job well. a 1030 is a clumbsy pos, hard starting, no brakes, no steering, i'd take an 1850 Oliver any day over a 1030

I am not knocking the Oliver, nice tractor. My 1030 had excellent brakes. Probably would slide the DUALS in raw ground. Steering was tight and nice too. The comparison between 75 and 100 HP is not real fair, they are different tractors.

Stay Away From The 1800 Oliver Diesel ,We had one,It left Faster than it got Here !No Power,Poor over all tractor. We all so had a 2150 Oliver Nothing But Truble,Go with the Case you'll like it a whole lot better, than all the REPAIR work it will take to Keep the Olivers Working.

As with anything that old check it over well. The Case would be a bit newer and a bit heavier and a few more horses. The Olies aren"t a bad tractor but you should ask on the Oliver board about quirks on them. See old posts here on the quirks of the 1030"s. I"d probably stear towards a 930 instead. An 870 Case diesel or a Oliver 1650/55 would be a good choices for what you"re looking to do. Big enough but not too big. You don"t need a huge tractor to run most round balers but you don"t want the "tail wagging the dog" with a small tractor on there either.

We currently have two 930's and have had a 1030 in the past. We live in NW Wisconsin. I'd say they start as good as any diesel of that era....Not too bad. We really liked our 1030.

The neighbor has a 1800 gasser. He's had quite a little engine trouble, but I'm not sure what all the reasons are for that.

I think you'd be happy with either one, but I lean more to the CASE.

Neither of these are a utility tractor. Too big for baling hay and doing choirs. The 1030 is a horse for plowing. The 1030 cross port, pre-chamber fuel injection system does not start good in cold weather. Would need a block heater for sure. Your clutch foot will get tired on the hay baler.

Round balers are stop-and-go and they like variable speed depending on how heavy the winrows are. An IH 656 gas HYDRO, in GOOD condition, would be a good choice. The gas engine will start in cold weather without a lot of fuss. My brother does about 20,000 bales per year and has three 656 hydros--two are gas for winter loading and general bale handling. The baler tractor is a 656 hydro diesel for variable speed.
