Got a DC4 with a bad magneto. How does one go about switching it to a distributor and coil system? Or is it cheaper to buy a different magneto? Looking for options. jim

Just thought I would show you what I did with my dead lai, got this idea from a good fellow in canada, cant rember his name, took a little machining, but now I know it is not the mag that was causing my missfiring, DCDENNIS

The horizontal IH Farmall distributors from Cub through M will work, see link below. The vertical Delco units off such tractors as a WD Allis Chalmers will work a little better. Make sure the drive mechanism that fits onto the shaft is with it, see photos in link below. All you have to do is remove your magneto and bolt this unit on using the same bolt holes and mount an external coil.

Right angle distributor is easier to install. Look for a Delco-Remy Model 1111411.

Internal parts are available off the shelf at an auto parts store

Borg Warner Part # are:
Points A40V
Conden G102A
Rotor D10
Cap C150

Here's a picture on how to switch a mag to a distributor. You will need an auto type coil, ignition switch and battery voltage fed the coil.
Disconnect the mag's coil at the points and run a wire from the new coil to the points. You will need to remove the ground wire on the mag used for stopping the engine. Hal

Did you try cleaning the points on the mag with find sand paper or emory board? That's usually the most common problem.

We've had to convert several due to unavailibility of parts for the Case mags. The right-angle Delco's used on Allis & Farmalls work good-they bolt right on. I think the rotation is the opposite way, but just wire the plugs correctly. Parts are available @ your friendly I-H dealer or at NAPA. If you have an alternator, just get a 12V coil. This is just my personal opinion others may feel differently. If you have a dead or no battery you can crank start the mag equipped tractor but with a distributor and coil its no dice. Didn't plow with it at night, but we never had a battery on our LA it was always started with the hand crank.

I would repair or replace the mag if it were mine as it would look more original. Most SCs and DCs you see with a dist/coil set up were aftermarket conversions.
