I have a 1959 400B. The transmission grinds going into any gear, but when it is in gear it works fine. Is this normal. It is a Case-o-matic. Also the pto shaft does not engage. What should I look for?

I have a 411b the pto does not operate unless the small rod about 1/2 inch in diamater to the left of the pto shaft at the back of the tractor is pushed in with a small pry bar. This activates the pto to operate , the rod goes in about 1/2 an inch to ingage the pto.

Mike:

I have a 611B with the same symptom. Keep the throttle low. If I'm in a hurry to get going, I start the tractor in gear with the clutch held in. Let out the clutch, and go. Once the tractor has warmed up and the case-o-matic fluid is warm, the shifting is easier. I usually try to slow everything down and shift into 4th first. It grinds a little, but just ease it in. There's no syncros in there. I run 10w-30 in my case-o-matic and 90w in the trans.

George, I thought you were suspose to run automatic transmission fluid in the case-o-matic?
