I have a late 70's Case 220 Hydrive. I've put a new starting interlock/speed detent unit in but it slips out of FWD or REV while riding. The pin on the speed lever looks polished but not very worn. Could there be excessive pressure from the speed valve trying to center itself? Help!

there is also a spring on the back side of the control valve, under a cap. that spring is there just to keep the spool from going the opposite direction if the brake is slamed on real hard. we have been removing them for almost 20 years with no ill effects..

return travel ---- make sure you put the washer and cap back on . I've been doing this the last couple years by just removing the cap and yanking the spring out with a pair of side cutters. this all came about because CASE said to shorten the spring originally --that didn't work so i started yanking them out. that worked. but if you jamb on the brake real hard it'll go into reverse

Sounds like you may have your 'Return to Neutral' spring to tight or your parking brake is set. This is the spring between the travel lever that is hooked to the brake pedal linkage. The spring needs just enough pressure to pull the linkage to neutral. Good luck.

The spring on the Brake linkage was removed with no improvement. However, there is considerable spring pressure from the valve itself, forcing it to center when I remove the travel linkage from the valve. This is what is overcomming the travel lever detents.
