Bought it last July and the previous owner said it knocked as of late. Didn't start it as I got a good deal on it and had planned on dropping the pan and checking for play anyway. Checked valves also. Didn't get to it to early. Last week actually. Their was a major knock. Checked bearings, inside two were foil thin at best, outside two were decent. Replaced them and torqued to spec, sort of, rod bolt nut stripped away. Checked my million parts of jeep items and found an exact match for bolts and nuts. Re-torqued after slathering much oil on the surfaces and took the plugs out to reduce friction and hand turned motor. Perfect. Attached cables and cranked the motor. Kinda. Replaced battery cables with #1 size. Cleaned posts, ground surface. Cranked motor. 100% better but not quite what was called for. Removed starter and dismantled, found much corrosion and gunk. Dremel tool took care of gunk and corrosion. Cleaned stator and brushes, replaced bearings. Re-attached started and presto spun like a 12 volt. Now for the question about the bearings. Why did the middle two disentegrate when the outside two didn't? Thanks, Mike.
