Case 400 won't go into 1st gear

for some reason our case 400 won't go into 1st gear when i try it. when i engage the clutch just a little bit it grinds but then i push the clutch in all the way and it won't go into 1st so if someone tell me whats wrong it would be great

Does it shift properly in all the other gears? If not, I would suspect wear on the end of the gear shift lever and pivot point that gives you the motion on the shifter rails. If it's only first gear, sounds like something broke/bent/binding/missing on the shift rail for first/second gear or the sliding gearset itself. Either way, you'll need to take off the top of the transmission case to see what's going on in there. Get yourself the I&T manual and a parts book if you go to do this yourself, don't go into this blind. Sorry I can't be of any more help, sometimes you just gotta look it over!
