My tractor has developed a slapping type of noise that doesn't seem serious but is noticeable mostly at low rpm's.It's coming from the # 2 cylinder(the second cylinder from the front).I know this because the noise disappears when I pull out the #2 plug wire.I've adjusted the timing and replaced the plugs, but hasn't helped.Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?Thanks in advance.

I have pulled out the offending piston and find that there is a bit of play in the wrist pin and connecting rod. There is a brass or copper coloured metal insert inside the connecting rod that seems to be wore out and causing excessive play in the pin.Could this be the problem?Again , there isn't a lot of movement, just more than a nice tight fit.Can the brass or whatever insert in the connecting rod be pressed out and replaced? Thanks again guys.

I would say you found the problem. The wrist pin bushing should have a nice snug fit with no up and down play. There will be side to side movement though.

Thanks Zeigler, and referring to your post about the rod bearing ,I notice a couple of small scratches in the rod bearing, but aren't very deep, just enough to catch your finger nail on.The scratches don't go around the entire bearing, just maybe half way. What do you think? Thanks.

Hi Cliff, it probably is the wrist pin, drop the pan and check it out, if you keep running it like that, it can destroy your bore by leaving very deep groves in the cylinder walls,-Brad

Thanks fordson,as a matter of fact I tried that with an axe handle I had laying around, but couldn't really pinpoint where the noise originated from.It vaguely sounded worse, to my untrained ear, near the cylinder itself, as opposed to the crank, so your theory of the wrist pin being bad is reasonable. Can I verify this by removing the pan and inspecting from the bottom? Also, will this condition get worse and damage the engine, or is it a nuisance only, as I said the noise isn't very bad and it's only noticeable at idle rpm's anyway. I don't work the tractor hard, just doing the driveway in the winter. Thanks again.
