Still looking at/for 1070 Case's. Have someone that says he has a 1070 "Black Knight". What is/was a "Black Knight" and is it some sort of a special tractor? Did they come with power shift tranny's? What years were they built? Any info would be appreciated. I have only heard of this designation a time or two, but really don't know what it means. Thanks.

there is no such thing as a gold demo or a golden demo, or a golden harvester! there were all called black knights! early one had desert sunset cabs,770-870-970-1070. later ones were all black,770-870-970-1070-1170-1470. there were also black knight lawn and garden tractors.

Farmer Tom,

The "Black Knights" and "Golden Demonstrators" were units with special paint jobs issued to the dealers for demonstrator purposes. I'm not sure the total of each built but they had the same equiptment as a regular 1070. There were also some 870's with the special paint and a few 1470 four wheel drives. The idea was that the dealer put these tractors out for farmers to use and the paint job was to draw attention to them. They were eventually sold to farmers after the program ran its course.

Thanks.

I beleave there were 1170 Black Knights. If I remember correctly, a dealer could order the Black Knight in most any tractor available at that time. Each dealer got one per year. The Golden Demos were 1970 year model and the cabs were painted Desert Sunset. In 1971 and 1972 the cabs were painted black to match the hood and fenders, which was nicer looking (my opinion).

When the 1170s came out they were a real "horse". Unfortunately somebody goofed at the factory and a part of the rear end, I think the differential center wheel, did not go through the final heat treat process. They were too soft and the rear ends went out of all of them, some in just a few hours of use. Also, they had a problem with the air cleaners and alot of them had to be overhauled because of dirt getting in the engine. Because of the bad reputation when they got these problems fixed they changed the number to 1175.
