When I got the Case 300 (I think it's a 1956 310) it had a 12 volt batery in it. The starter moter was bad. When I went to get a new starter I could only find a 6 volt starter.

The tractor was probably origionally 6 volt. The generator appears to be origional. Does anyone know how to tell if its been changed to 12 volt. What would happen if a 12 volt battery was put in a 6 volt system. I'm quessing this is why the starter on the tractor was bad.

What would it take to switch the system over to 12 volts, other than finding a 12 volt starter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Case 311 that was converted over to 12 volt when I got it. It still has the 6 volt starter on it. The 12 volt system really slams the 6 volt starter bendix into the fly wheel. I had to buy a new bendix not long ago. Does the generator still have the voltage regulator on it? You might be able to tell whether it is 6 or 12 volt by looking at it. If you want to convert to 12 volt you will have to get an in-line resistor at your local auto parts store and some 12 volt headlamps.
